She was the first Latina actress to win an Oscar for best supporting actress as the Sharks gang leader girlfriend, tough “Anita” in one of my all time favorite musicals “West Side Story”.
Born Rosa Delores Alverio. December 11, 1931 in Humacao, Puerto Rico. At the age, of 5 . She started all her acting, singing and dancing to escape the harness of the Bronx…Her debut came at the age of 13 on Broadway! She was discovered by Louis B. Mayer of MGM. He then called her” Spanish Elizabeth Taylor”.
She was one in 11 who have won all four major entertainment awards. Emmy, Tony, Oscar and Grammy.
We also remember her in the children learning shows like Sesame Street, and Electric Company. She was also awaken by Marlon Brando about the Civil Rights movement. Joined the March on Washington. Sitting 10 feet from Dr. Martin Luther King.
Latin is apart my history. And often times we forget other women who have paved the way and broke ground through sexual discrimination and racial barriers for women of color and for Latinos in the entertainment industry.
She is worth mentioning for great women in March!
